EWRS Training Course “Writing and Publishing a Scientific Paper” held in Lleida, Spain, on June 30, 2025

The workshop held by Dana MacGregor from Rothamsted Research addressed the basic skills necessary for writing and publishing scientific papers
The training course was organised within the framework of the Education and Training Working Group of the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) and was intended for researchers, early-career scientists, and PhD students who wish to improve their skills in writing and publishing research results in international journals.
The program covered all the important steps in manuscript preparation: from selecting an appropriate journal and understanding the peer-review procedures, through drafting the abstract and introduction, to presenting the methodology and results clearly, as well as properly citing sources. Special emphasis was placed on practical advice on how to increase the visibility of published papers and which strategies can contribute to broader reach and higher citation of research.
Participants had the opportunity to examine the challenges of manuscript writing through concrete examples and to receive feedback on ways to improve their own texts.
25 colleagues from various European countries attended the course. During the full day of activities, participants actively exchanged experiences, discussed issues related to the publication process, and talked about steps that can contribute to higher-quality writing. The workshops were accompanied by joint discussions, which further encouraged the exchange of ideas and advice. At the end, a concluding discussion and summary of the main takeaways were held, and all participants were provided with materials and recommended resources that will be useful in their future work.
