Working Group Meetings

Long Ashton 1999

The first formal gathering of the working group open to any interested EWRS members was held at Long Ashton Research Station, UK between 19 and 21 November 1999. The Long Ashton meeting was attended by 14 participants. Those present reported that they had found the meeting to be constructive and successful. A number of other researchers have since expressed their interest in joining the working group. Participants arrived on the Thursday evening, which was followed by a full day of discussion and informal presentations on the Friday. The meeting concluded on the Saturday with a tour of the weed science and germination facilities at Long Ashton research station

Meeting summary
bullet

Progress reports on the two joint experiments started in 1999.

bullet

Ideas for a new collaborative experiment on early growth.

bullet

The development and content of the working group web page, including links with other EWRS working groups. Also, graphical updates of emergence data from each of the participating sites in the collaborative weed emergence experiment.

bullet

The objectives, seed characterisation and collective analysis of the data resulting from the joint experiments.

bullet

Participants at the workshop had the chance to hear directly from and question Frank Forcella (USDA) about Weedcast
(http://www.infolink.morris.mn.us/~lwink/products/weedcast.htm
), a commercially available weed emergence model currently being used in the USA by growers. It was agreed that the data collected from the joint experiment could be used with Weedcast and that most of the necessary parameters were satisfied. Where information was not available members of the working group volunteered to help provide the necessary information. Other models were also discussed as candidates for comparison. Biometricians and modellers present at the meeting all agreed to initiate ongoing discussions to identify the mathematical and practical problems and opportunities for our data set before the next workshop and to report back to the working group regularly during 2000 on progress.

bullet

The need for a future focused 2-day conference on weed germination and early growth.

bullet

Potential group funding opportunities were identified and members volunteered to take responsibility to follow these up and report back to the group.
