Wageningen 1988

Purpose of the Wageningen meeting:

To establish whether there is sufficient interest to create a working group and if so what format should that working group take. At the time of the meeting this area was not covered by an existing Working Group within the EWRS, yet represented a crucial stage in weed biology and ultimately the improvement and identification of new weed control opportunities. Following the workshop held in Wageningen (19th to 22nd November 1998) it was decided by all present that there was both enthusiasm and scientific grounds to request the establishment of an EWRS Working Group. A brief summary follows:

Summary of day 1

The first day of the meeting involved a series of eight presentations by participants reflecting as far as possible the research interests covered within the group. Presentations included the most recent developments in the specific areas of research, the most challenging results and their implication for production systems.

The presentations provoked a lively debate which could be summarised into the following main topic areas:

bulletMaternal effects
bulletDormancy and germination
bulletEarly growth
bulletWhat is actually required by the farmer/grower and what can we realistically deliver?
bulletPersistence and ageing of seeds

Summary of day 2
bulletAs a result of the discussions, it was decided that there were sufficient grounds for collaboration and enthusiasm for the formal establishment of an EWRS Working Group.
bulletIt was suggested that the title of the working group should be "Germination and Early Growth", in order to incorporate the interests within the group present.
bulletAndrea Grundy agreed to prepare a formal proposal to the EWRS, which would include an agreed 3-year plan and clear ideas about the aims and potential output of the group.
bulletA preliminary draft for two potential joint experiments were agreed.
